Even though there is no question here, yes the hostess staff is rude, the wait staff is also depending on who you get. The place is dirty and the last time I went there was a major problem with my order and manager did nothing about it. Better options in the area and Wichita in general.
Save your money and go to a place that actually appreciates their customers.
They do not take reservations at Sumos its first come first serve
They do allow call in for carry out. I picked up sushi last night, and they were very rapid to answer the phone and they had my order ready within minutes of me arriving. I have never had an issue with them answering the phone even to call and ask about wait times.
We have always requested our favorite chef there, even though they say that you can't.
It depends on what night your going. During the week, you can just about show up and they'll seat you quickly because 12 would be a full hibachi table. Friday or Saturday night, a couple hours notice would be plenty
I was told yesterday that they do not take reservations.
It's a very entertaining and sometimes comical food preparation directly in front of all guests seated at the table/cook top. Have your camera ready for the fire show. Impressive.
8 comfortable I couldn't imagine 16.
The food and service was great, the restaurant was generally clean and comfortable. We brought our younger children and they were very entertained. This was our second chance because the previous weekend had a 2+ hour wait. If you get there by 6 chances of getting are good
Amazing food and great service! My wife has a shellfish allergy and we just have to tell them once and they go out of their way to make sure they dont cross contaminate. Great place to spend a birthday or anniversary.
8/9/19 - they cooked my fried rice with whirl!!!LOTS of WHIRL!!! Fried rice is made with butter. And what's with that garlic??? Couldn't watch the meat destroyed. Old review - Wichita's Benihana. Not bad.
If I could put 10 stars I put 100. It has been a wish of mine to eat at Sumo's for years now and it finally happened. Service is excellent, can't top that. The showmanship was extraordinarily great. And the food, the alone deserves 100 stars. I haven't tasted anything so succulent and incredible in my life. It will an honor to continue eating there when I can. It is definitely worth the price. You get what you pay and more.
My party of ten had a slight mix up and had to split to different tables. But they worked it out and seated us quickly. The experience with the chef and staff was awesome. Mr Hon the waiter filled my Dr Pepper quickly and often to really please. The food portion was tasty and enough for Sunday leftovers. Thanks for making my babygirl's birthday dinner great.
The service here is great and the food is good, just make sure you get there early because they always have a wait. We prefer a different hibachi restaurant over Sumo because of the different sauces and flavor profiles, but we will go to Sumo if recommended by others in our group.
They were able to seat our group of nine at one table. Everyone had a good time, the hibachi chef was entertaining during the food preparation. There was plenty of food and the service was great. Thanks..
As usual, Sumo did NOT disappoint! Service was great, food was excellent and I'm excited that they were open and ready for business!
I have been a patron of Sumo for a few years. The wait and lack of communication by the hostess to the party’s waiting seems to be a repeat issue. Normally this leads to the customer becoming upset and ends with both the employee and customers in a frustrated position. I recommend removing the “accepts reservations” from your Google page to alleviate the expectation by customers. Lastly, I would love to see a level of accommodation for customers with Special Needs. Food was delicious (per usual) and the service was amazing!
Great food, good customer service! The hibachi area was a fun experience and actually a lot of food with the clear broth, Asian salad, veggie medley, shrimp, garlic fried rice, and an entree, so much food! And all of it was delicious!
All the sudden we’re only doing reservations now but when I called it was first come first serve, foods good but won’t be back.
Awesome food and great Atmosphere
Their fried rice is life changing!
Sumo is the better Japanese steak house in Wichita. But it's not without its flaws.Sumo's has a tendency for unprofessional conduct such as the way they answer the phone, the attire being worn by the hostess / waitresses, and the things the chefs will sometimes say that kind of... Breaks character. They have inconsistent food quality, but that's pretty much just Wichita across the board. Some days their lobster or steak will be pretty bad, some days it will be absolutely delicious.Overall, this is one of the finer dining experiences you can get in Wichita, and it's fairly cheap for the experience.
Fun place for supper. Fresh cooked to my specific desires. Entertaining at the same time.
I just love Sumo! I love seeing the reactions my kids have to the hibachi chefs. I love the fun those chefs provide. They make it a real memorable experience. I'll warn people with a large family that it can be real expensive, but to me it's worth it. The food is also really good. The chefs will flavor it more to your liking if you ask. They have a very basic menu but I find that's all you need. The vegetables are delicious and oh my gosh the rice is amazing. I also like their salad that comes with it. Go, you'll enjoy it!
This place is pretty nice. It has plenty of hibachi grills. Was my first time there back in March and it was packed. We waited for over an hour for a so so chef that hardly talked to us. He did a good job on the grill. I just don't think I'd go here again because of the long wait. They told us 20 minutes so we stayed and waited, never again will I wait that long.
I haven't done the Hibachi dinner, but the sushi is great. The sushi dining area isn't nice and is a bit neglected compared to the grill areas. I know the Hibachi is there specialty, but they should still keep up with the sushi fans.
I've been here several times over the years and the food is always fantastic. It's hit and miss on if you get an energetic cook or one that you can tell just doesn't want to be there.
Have called them 14 times , they say their open but dont answer their phone at all , seems like they are not hurting for business !!!!!!!!! always have had issues with ordering food , either be able to operate correctly or just close down until you can - we all pay pricey fees for our food here , your not McDonalds !!!!!!!
Not impressed for the money I paid - chicken overcooked, rice was made with something yellow but it wasn't butter, veggies overcooked as well. And....pay attention....it's $3.00 more per order for fried rice vs. white rice. Service was okay - not outstanding I'd expect for this kind of restaurant. Disappointed - I won't go back.
First experience yesterday and I loved it will be back soon
Amazing sushi, always great food. Atmosphere is a little loud if you only want to get sushi and enjoy nice conversation. The Habachi side of the restaurant is delicious and entertaining, always a wait , so plan ahead and go early.
This was my first visit to any Japanese restaurant and Sumo by Nambara gave me a great experience and taste of authentic food. The entrance lobby is spacious and the service was superb. The staff was attentive and courteous. The interior is bit crammed but the seating was comfortable. The person who attended us and served food also cooked it right in front of us by entertaining with fire tricks. This was a memorable experience.♿️ This place has:Yes=Ramp access.Yes=A wheelchair-accessible Entrance.Yes=A wheelchair-accessible Restroom/Toilet.Yes=A wheelchair-accessible Seating.Yes=A wheelchair-accessible Parking.
Very disappointed with the food and chef. We asked the chef for white sauce and he told us that they don't have it, that it must be something from the east coast... like really? A Japanese restaurant without white sauce or "yum sauce" however you want to call it; his answer was so disrespectful but I got him right back by saying that KOBE (the competition) has it and they are not in the east coast but the west side of town 🤔?... he automatically shut up...The chicken is dry, vegetables were overcooked, chef didn't followed the instructions of our waiter and food came up wrong, the rice was decent but for $90+ for 3 meals... their is no next time for us here, we will stick to KOBE at west.
I haven't done the Hibachi dinner, but the sushi is great. The sushi dining area isn't nice and is a bit neglected compared to the grill areas. I know the Hibachi is there specialty, but they should still keep up with the sushi fans.
Came in at 5 and they told us they could seat us at 730. When 730 came we waited an hour and a half before we gave up and left. Manager and hostess was very rude
my wife and I love this restraunt we have never had any issues with the food or the service and the cook makes your food right in front of you nice experience
THE FOOD IS OMG AMAZING!!!! BUT THE CHEFS ARE SUPERDOPER
Food is good but the wait is not worth it. We got there about 6:45 and left at almost 10:00. We we were told it was an hour to hour & 15 minutes but what they don’t tell is that is just to get to a table. It will be another 30-45 minutes before you get a cook there. Not to mention the first people you see when you walk in are rude. Next time we will take our family to Kobe Steakhouse. 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻
Food was okay. We were told there wasn’t a wait, then they directed us to the “bar”. Our first & last time dining at this establishment after waiting 45 mins!!! to be seated. Wine selection not great. And entire restaurant seemed sticky & dirty. Very disappointing & did NOT live up to the hype.
They don't take reservations so our party of 8 had to wait for an hour to be seated. Place was dirty, furniture needed replaced, and customer service was lacking. Food was pretty good though.
Website says they are open Monday 4-8pm and their phone recording says they are open from 4:30-8:30 ! Which is it ? So we drive 20 miles to order only to see they are closed. These are even the updates hours for Covid?? Also store phone automatically hangs up on you after recording to try to order carry out! Wasted time and gas!!!
